Radiators

Mention the term ‘radiator’ and you may automatically think of two things. The first is the radiator in your car. The purpose of these types of radiator is to dissipate heat. They are fitted to most combustion engines to help keep them cool. The second is the type of radiator you probably have in your home as part of the central heating system powered by your boiler. This has the purpose of heating by convection and thereby heating your home. These radiators were invented by an American, William Baldwin and brought central heating to homes towards the end of the nineteenth century. These first cast iron radiators can still be seen in places such as stately homes and are still a popular design, being seen as the classic radiators. Radiator design has advanced to use new materials and increase efficiency. It is also heavily influenced by the trends and fashions of the latest homes and décor. Cast iron radiators may still be popular with those who prefer the retro look but modern styles have led to modern classic radiators. Wall mounted slim line radiators are now extremely popular. Good examples are the bowed towel rail units or the futuristic looking Zephyr radiators. These new models use chrome or stainless steel in their design and are extremely efficient at warming homes. Their design means that they are also ideal for smaller rooms, saving on the space. The Zephyr radiators for example are vertically mounted and less than two inches deep.

Zephyr Radiators

Destined to become classic radiators in their own right this new design combines all the latest developments in radiator technology with the latest trends and fashions in modern homes. Using stainless steel and offered in two stunning finishes brushed or polished these radiators are still less than four inches deep when vertically mounted on a wall. Ranging in size from 1500mm in height and 990mm in width to 2000mm in height and 240mm in width the Zephyr radiators are ideal for almost any room. Their low profile and ability to be wall mounted make these radiators especially suited to rooms where space is at a premium. Modern accessories such the thermostatic valve adds to the money saving attraction at a time when gas prices are continually rising. This new style also blends seamlessly with the more classic radiators you may find in the modern home. Today’s radiators can also be multi purpose with everything from mirrored to curtain styles available. One of the more popular is the towel rail design which not only heats the room but also doubles as a towel hanger and dryer. Today’s modern designs are as much about subtlety and minimalism as the old Victorian designs where about grandeur. However, if it is the old cast iron retro look you want then modern materials have enabled these to be redesigned so that they also can be wall mounted as well as floor mounted. Cast with patterns on the surface they still look original.

Cast Iron Radiators

The cast iron design was the first widely available type of radiator. They can still be seen in some Victorian buildings today but most of these radiators have been replaced as they are highly inefficient by today’s standards. Although the old design has been phased out cast iron radiators are still available but are produced with modern techniques to make them lighter and much more efficient. So whether you want traditional looking design with feet to match or a retro looking multi column radiator which can be wall mounted these are all now available. While these designs are often classed as the classic radiators the new wall mounted designs are now seen as a modern classic. The Zephyr radiators are the pinnacle of this type design. Extremely lightweight and very low profile they can be mounted to look more like modern art than a radiator. These classic radiators are the latest in a long line of wall mounted designs that are getting thinner and more efficient. These include curved and bowed radiators which are made with a stainless steel or chrome finish which is currently popular in modern kitchens and bathrooms. The Zephyr radiators and their predecessors have now become the most popular designs available as they offer less bulk and are much more subtle in the modern home than the traditional cast iron floor mounted radiators. The radiator continues to develop although under floor home electric heating is becoming more popular for those replacing older heating systems.

Classic Radiators

Whether you want traditional cast iron radiators or the latest architectural mirrored designs there are lots of classics to choose from. Today’s modern radiators offer a blend of the latest modern materials and production techniques with tradition or modern art to provide whatever you need for your home. Models such as the Zephyr radiators are so thin that when vertically mounted on the wall they look more like panelling than radiators. The Zephyr radiators can also be horizontally mounted at low level. Today’s classics can be curved to match perfectly with any wall in any room or they can be bowed to stand out. Modern machining techniques can also provide radiators that fit perfectly into a corner or have a low profile to blend in to their surroundings as much as possible. The most popular modern classic radiators are the towel rail models. These come in variety of designs and can be seen in any modern bathroom suite showroom. Modern cast iron radiators are available with or without feet so that they can be floor or wall mounted. They also come in a variety of finishes from patterned anthracite to enamel white. They also come in a variety of sizes with the number of columns ranging from one to four. A good example is the traditional looking Windsor Anthracite. This is a three column radiator with a patterned anthracite grey finish. A more modern example is the vertically wall mounted Bisque radiator in an aluminium or white finish.
